Midgefest 2012

What a fabulous, fun and sunshiney day it turned out to be.

Ranger events including kids games, a giant willow midge, throw the midges at the sundew, parachute play, midgefest flags and bunting, kids craft activites (midge masks, midge pebble painting), treasure hunt, raffle of some fabulous prizes including dinner for two at the castle bistro, a weekend in a camping cabin, membership to the Friends of Rum, delicious local home brew wine, voucher for lunch at the teashop, a selection of goodies from Rum Crafts, midge repellent kit including incence sticks and citronella candles and some very generous midge protection kits curtesy of Mosiguard.

We had very special guest appearances from the white tailed sea eagles with a fly by in the afternoon and the Midgecatcher was on hand all day with his very large net ready to pounce on any likely looking little bitey creatures...

The day turned to evening and we celebrated a great day with breaking open the midge pinata

Finally we ended the day as all the best days here on Rum see the sun going down. Plenty of music and dancing!

The only thing missing at the first Midgefest was the midges themselves. There was one very briefly spotted during the afternoon on someone's arm but other than that the day proved midge-free other than the ones we'd made, crafted, painted or created ourselves.

Joining the Buzz

Plans for Midgefest 2012 are hotting up as we continue to enjoy the sort of summer very few other places in the UK are getting according to weather reports. Rum has been balmy, mostly dry and actually a bit light on midges so far this year. I'm sure they are all saving their energy for August 4th.

We have a full programme of events lined up including raffle, treasure hunt, ranger event, games,  kids craft activities, competitions, a barbecue and midge themed goodies. All of this alongside the usual Rum tourist attractions whether you are planning a visit for the day or longer. Check out http://www.isleofrum.com/index.php for planning your visit in full.

Our Midgefest posse have been busily coming up with ideas at our weekly Buzz meeting and we're looking forward to an exciting and biting event here on Rum.

Midgefest 2012 Isle of Rum

Saturday August 4th 2012. The first Rum Midgefest.

Forget the red deer, the sea eagles , Kinloch castle and the cuilins. Rum heritage, history and culture is shaped every summer by that tiny but most powerful of beasties, the midge!

This year we're celebrating all things midge - come and join us for a midgetastic day. Watch this space for more information coming soon.
